I don’t know about the rest of you that live in NYC, but I have been here for almost 2 years, and other than the friends I’ve met through work, or my church, I have one hell of a time making friends! I’ve also lived in Chicago, and Wisconsin, and no other place I’ve been have I had as much difficulty making friends than I have here. When I first moved I was talking to my co-worker who said she also had a very difficult time, so she took up knitting, and joined a knitting club to meet people (I am not even joking). A few other people I’ve talked to have also said the only way they’ve been able to meet people is through volunteering, joining a group, or networking events. The nice thing about the networking events that are hosted in the city is that they are full of people wanting to meet other people.
I’ve attended a few of these networking events and my favorite one is No Tie Networking. It’s a networking group that is full of younger professionals, without being so stuffy. Usually there is a networking event at a bar once a month. There is no entry fee, but drinks are on your own. Be sure to bring a business card as they are the easiest way to get your name & number out there, but mostly it’s just a great way to meet a lot of people.
Here is the next event:
